Laser Tongue and Lip-Tie Treatment (Frenectomy)

What are Tongue-Ties and Lip-Ties?

Tongue-ties and lip-ties refer to a condition where a thick, string-like band of connective tissue underneath the tongue or lip restricts normal movement of the muscles.

Tongue-ties are common, affecting 1 in 5 individuals. This condition can interfere with daily functions, such as feeding, speech, sleep, and jaw development. In contrast, lip-ties, although less prevalent, can still lead to nursing difficulties, cavities on the front teeth, and even create a gap between the front two teeth.

Both the tongue and lips are composed of intricate muscles that help people perform various oral functions. Tongue- and lip-ties can make it challenging to nurse, eat, speak, sleep, and breathe properly. If left untreated, these conditions can persist into adulthood and result in various problems, such as sleep-disordered breathing, headaches, and neck and shoulder pain.

How are Tongue-Ties and Lip-Ties Treated?

Once we conduct a thorough evaluation to confirm the necessity of releasing the lip- or tongue-tie, we use a non-invasive dental laser to eliminate the excess tissue. This brief procedure is minimally invasive, comfortable, and causes little to minimum bleeding. We also provide guidance on follow-up care and recommend exercises to ensure a successful treatment outcome.
